Patch 4.2, like all patches, is going to be prime gold making time. I went over the
craftable item list along with what I planned on stockpiling a few weeks ago. Since that time, Blizzard hasn't released tons of new items - but they have clarified how some of the items will be obtained. We now have partial lists of both items that we will be able to craft right away along with items that will be obtained from vendors that only become available after doing certain dailies. Furthermore, it looks like it will take about five weeks to
unlock the first vendor and a further five days to unlock each additional vendor (the amount of time needed could easily change).
With this in mind it is now looking like there will almost be two releases of items - and thus two chances to make gold. During the initial rush a market will develop for all of the newly available items - leading to a spike in demand (and prices) for the materials needed to make those items. This spike in prices will slowly decline until even more recipes become available and a new spike in demand will develop for goods needed to make the second set of items.
In order to best see where these spikes in demand (and price) are likely to develop I put all the patch 4.2 craftable items I could find (if you know of something that is missing please sound off in the comments below) into two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet consists of items that will be available from the vendors as soon as patch 4.2 is released. The second spreadsheet consists of items that will become available roughly five weeks after patch 4.2 is released. This still left quite a few items left over. However, after looking at the items with no clear recipe source I decided to place them into the spreadsheet I believe they fit best in and mark the items with an "x" in column b for easy identification.
Each spreadsheet lists the craftable items along with the necessary materials required for crafting the item (items that are bought from vendors were ignored). At the bottom of each spread sheet I tallied up the number of each material needed to craft one of each item. The numbers in the row "Known Source" consist of all the materials need to craft the items with a known source on Wowhead. The numbers in the row "Unknown Source" consist of all the materials needed to craft the "known source" items plus the items that I think will be available soon after patch 4.2 is released but have no known source in Wowhead.
While I understand that demand will be higher for some items than others (Leatherworking leg armors, for instance, will have a higher demand than other armors) I believe that looking at all items equally does give a good "big picture" overview of where material demand will be high - even if the picture given will not be totally accurate. So just to reiterate - this information is not 100% accurate - I BELIEVE it will serve as a decent approximation of where price spikes are likely to occur but the information here could change at any time as the Blizzard PTR gods see fit.
One last note. Due to restrictions in Blogger the spreadsheet is a bit hard to navigate on this site. Click this link to be taken to the
Patch 4.2 Craftable Items From Trainer spreadsheet. To download it click "File" at the top right and then choose "Save As" and "Excel" or "Open Office". Then open the spreadsheet in the appropriate program.
Here are the spreadsheets with my comments:
Items That Should Be Available to Craft Soon After Patch 4.2 Is Released
Materials of Note:
Elementium Bars - Depending on the prices on your server and how profitable the shuffle is now I would definitely consider stockpiling some Elementium. If you have a blacksmith and plan to craft the above items, I would definitely pre-stock the necessary Elementium now so that you don't have to buy ore/bars once the patch comes out. How long the spike in prices will last depends on the farmers. If your server has a lot of farmers and bots and they aren't nerfed in patch 4.2 expect the spike in price to be short lived as all the bots switch gears and farm Elementium. If your server is bot free and/or bots get a major nerf in patch 4.2 expect the spike in price to last longer.
Volatile Water - This volatile seems to be used quite a lot in patch 4.2. I think this is due to the fact that originally this patch was also supposed to have some content relating to Abyssal Maw but that has been abandoned in favor of Firelands only content. I THINK that originally Abyssal Maw content would have lead to more sources of volatile water and thus when gear was created volatile water was a major component. Now that Abyssal Maw has been abandoned, however, the materials for the craftable items haven't changed but the source of increased volatile water has (AKA there isn't one). I thus think that Volatile Water will suffer from increased demand and a probable decrease in supply as people spend more time in Firelands. I am defintly stockpiling Volatile Water and it wouldn't surprise me if in patch 4.2 alchemists transmute in order to get Volatile Water as opposed to Volatile Air.
Volatile Fire - Volatile Fire is used more than any other volatile and I plan on stockpiling quite a bit of it. It wouldn't surprise me though if more Volatile Fire was also made available in patch 4.2 (as drops from creatures, herbalism/mining in Firelands, etc.) so even though more Volatile Fire is required than Volatile Water I think that there might also be an increase in supply of Volatile Fire that makes up for the difference.
Volatile Air - I don't see a big use for this volatile in patch 4.2 and wouldn't recommend stockpiling this volatile.
Savage Leather - Again I see a price spike here. I plan on stockpiling Savage Leather. If you have a leatherworker and plan on crafting I would definitely at least have enough leather stockpiled so that you can craft what you want without having to buy from the Auction House for a bit after the patch is released.
Pristine Hide - Since all Pristine Hide is used in items of unknown origin I plan on waiting to see where those items come from before making a decision on whether or not to stockpile some.
Blackened Dragonscale - See my recommendation on Savage Leather.
Embersilk Cloth - See my recommendation on Blackened Dragonscale.
Inferno Ink - I'd have a few set aside so that you can craft the relics if you have a toon that could make them.
Amberjewel and Ocean Sapphire - I wouldn't say stockpile as the market for these is already abysmal. You might have increased sales for a few hours but nothing to get excited about.
Inferno Rubies - I plan on stockpiling these. They always sell well and there will be a bit of extra demand.
Alright, well I had planned to post both spreadsheets today but seeing as this is already the world's longest post I am going to wait until tomorrow to post the second spreadsheet with the information on the craftable items that should become available later in the patch.
What do you guys think? Any items that I missed? Any other materials that you think should (or shouldn't) be stockpiled? Sound off below:
